Margarets Report.
What a start to the new year! It has been a difficult ride this last year with the drought taking its toll on our yields and the relentless dust storms being mentally exhausting. Fortunately this last month has brought a few downpours of rain which have replenished our dams and greened up the paddocks.
Harvest was finished in record time this year with a record low yield. The 2020 wines will be even rarer than the 2019! This year to help pick our grapes and assist Steven in the winery we have had an array of people from France to The Netherlands across to China and America. It’s a great feeling to learn about their cultures and showing them something uniquely Australian. We wish them all safe travels in these difficult times.
In the winery Steven is wrapping up the wines from 2020 and getting ready to prep the 2019 wines for bottling.
With the global pandemic of COVID 19 it’s a difficult time for us all. I did have another Camino in the plans but alas it is cancelled. The Wallington team are all doing well with Veronica my second youngest expecting her first child in early May. Until next Season I hope you all stay safe.
New wines
This month we are excited to be releasing our 2018 Cabernets blend. A bright and vibrant style, darker fruits of plum and blackberry and with a touch of Petit Verdot in the blend giving this wine a lovely floral lift. This wine is drinking well now or will age magnificently. We have also just released the 2019 Rosé. This vintage is predominantly Grenache with a touch of Cabernet Franc. A lovey textured and savoury style that is best enjoyed with a cheese plate or grazing board.
Nadja and Louella have teamed up for their “the Som and the Winemaker” project and are set to announce their mystery wine next month. Louella is the head sommelier at Bibo Wine bar in Double Bay, Sydney. Louella and Nadja went to school together in Orange and have always dreamed of creating a wine together.
